揚げ出し豆腐 Agedashi Dōfu – Deep Fried Tofu is a Tasty Japanese Treat

I love agedashi dofu!

Japan has so many delicious foods I had never heard of before visiting, especially when it comes to tofu. Next to Seiryo-ji Buddhist Temple in Kyoto is a lovely little store Saga Tofu, 嵯峨豆腐 森嘉 where you can watch agedashi dōfu 揚げ出し豆腐 made on-site.

Agedashi dōfu is a tofu lightly dusted with potato or corn starch then deep-fried until a crispy golden brown. It is a well known appetizer in Japan, found in the 1782 Japanese all-tofu cookbook Tofu Hyakuchin “One hundred Tofu.” It’s a perfect snack and delicious. I ate it without any dashi dipping sauce it normally is accompanied with, it was that tasty.

Yo can make it yourself, as there are many recipes on the web. Or if you are in Kyoto, stop by Saga Tofu, just to the right of Seiryo-Ji at:

Morika 42, Saga Shakadofujinokicho,
Ukyo-ku, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture
TEL: 075-872-3955

Entrance to Saga Tofu in Arashiyama next to Seiryu-ji in Kyoto.
Agedashi dofu comes in a variety of shapes and sizes.
