War is A County’s Own Self-Destruction
Hiroshima gets the star treatment as the city that the first atomic bomb was dropped on during World War II. Nagasaki that took the second atomic bomb, tends to remain in the background, we noticed, like a little sister. While visiting Nagasaki last September with my husband to meet a hibakusha, we made a major discovery you don’t hear much about.
It’s well known that Nagasaki was a last minute target because the weather was not optimal and cloudy. “Boxscar,” the United States Army Air Forces B-29 bomber, dropped the Fat Man nuclear weapon on the city, killing more than 75,000 civilians instantly.
Five-hundred feet north of the hypocenter was Urakami Cathedral, the grandest and largest Roman Catholic church in Asia at the time with more than 14,000 members. There were hundreds of thousands of Christians living in Southeast Japan. Everyone attending Mass that morning in anticipation of the upcoming celebration of the Assumption of Mary were killed at 11:01 a.m. when the bomb dropped.
War Betrays America’s Proclaimed Christian Faith
What irony! How symbolic! What destiny! The “Christian and pro-life America” drops an atomic bomb on its own church! In doing so it symbolically blew itself up, morally and ethically and betrayed its own faith. Christ taught love and forgiveness, not hated and vengeance.
He taught to love thy enemies, however, U.S. Commodore Perry’s Black Ships in Yokohama Bay and his gunboat diplomacy to force Japan’s emerging prosperous and peaceful society to open up to trade and begin selling it weapons of mass destruction to start colonizing Korea, Taiwan and China with and create more war doesn’t sound too loving.
You’d think because of my family’s contentious history with Japan I would still cheerlead our side of war’s terrible story, for my father’s stories still emerge in my mind reminding me, yes Japan definitely committed serious atrocities. But by dropping an atomic bomb on a Catholic Church just feet away from ground zero at Nagasaki means symbolically that the United States is self-destructive and is bombing itself. Considering the U.S.’s perpetual state of war that has eroded the Constitution and is descending into a Trump dictatorship, it is reaping what it sowed as it inches ever more toward late empire collapse.
For some other influence other than the Bible has guided America. It ignored this detail and followed not an Imitation of Christ, but the same State-merged-Christianity that Constantine dreamed up in the Fourth Century with the sign of the cross to conquer the rebelling masses and the world. (Buddhism and Shinto in Japan merged with the state too.) Now the United States dominates the world in the sign of a drug war and chose “Satan” of profit and hatred over love and forgiveness that Christ taught. These Christian leaders are what Emanuel Swedenborg wrote about the inner self not matching the outer self.
Wolves in Sheep’s Clothing
They are called the People of the Lie, Scott M. Peck’s eponymous book that explains how anyone can follow someone as obviously insane and destructive as Trump. Because Trump’s lies make lies ok, and it makes it ok for his followers to accept their lies. He, as other narcissists do, make it ok to not look at your “sin” and shadow to heal yourself, but instead take great pains to conceal this refusal to self-reflect, svadyaya in yoga, and project it onto others.
These “Christians” today are all wolves in sheep’s clothing. Only Mitt Romney and Christianity Today Magazine had the guts and conscience to to vote to impeach the biggest, baddest wolf of them all – Donald Trump.
The First Commandment of Thou shalt not kill, ahimsa in yoga, is MIA in America. Also, war-for-profit needs war and Imperialism is the highest stage of war, Vladimir Lenin said. Soren Kierkegaard in The Sickness Unto Death, said that war is the highest stage of what he calls, the despair of denial, anguish that forces one’s ego not to accept its mission but to try and change reality on its terms. It’s like the Hindu demons against the goddess Durga; they think they can win, but in the end She always cuts their heads off.
By intentionally targeting civilians with atomic bombs, America ignored Christ and chose “Satan” and hatred over love that Christ taught. It betrayed all that Christians are supposed to believe in. Carl Jung said that whatever isn’t dealt with in the unconscious comes to you as fate. The atomic bombing of Nagasaki and a Catholic Church at ground zero is bombing your own faith. It’s called a hypocrite. The Greek root word of hypocrite is hypokritēs, a stage actor– and it’s an actor who refuses to play the part in his own play, but remain unconscious.
George Orwell was right when he said, “The nationalist not only does not disapprove of atrocities committed by his own side, but he has a remarkable capacity for not even hearing about them.”
The result is endless war raging on. The First Commandment of Thou shalt not kill, ahimsa in yoga, is nowhere to be found in this “Christian Nation, just some Trump Nazis making photo ops, just as Hitler did, in front of churches to appear faithful. How can any one, especially a Catholic, vote for “Satan?” Because it saves them taxes, I’ve learned. In fact, the fractional reserve banking system, that started out of London, creates war itself and is the Federal Bank’s original purpose in printing up fiat currency to fund these wars.
Also, war-for-profit needs expanding markets, and Imperialism is the highest stage of war, Vladimir Lenin said. Indeed, by dropping an atomic bomb on a Catholic Church in Nagasaki, the capitalists have betrayed their faith and hung themselves with their own rope that they sold to the Japanese.
Remembering Love and Compassion
“Where there is no love, I will send love and there will be love.” St. John of the Cross said, even while his own priests tortured him. Christ taught love, and love is love. I realize I can’t hold anger and hate even toward Trump, despite his never ending insanity and danger. That would be eating poison hoping the rat will die.
Naturally I have a dark side too. It would be a lie not to admit. But I am human and even Jesus and Durga got angry over some injustice and kicked some butts and chopped some heads. Over the past few months I have been doing some shadow work, looking at my own bag of stones instead of throwing them at others. It isn’t pretty, but the point is to become conscious and transforms and integrates, lessens the tension between the opposites, as Jung says. Then you are whole and at peace, not split and at war.
I meditate, pray and work to overcome my negativity or “sins” with love. The root word of satan is the Greek diabolos, to slander or throw an obstacle in your path. ) For I consider myself a Christian who practices Buddhism and yoga, and worships nature like the Stoics and Shinto and Goddesses of Early Greece. I love Ravana, so to speak, the dark rejected sides of the world and myself, Trump, war, and I know I must turn the other cheek, because they, too, are nature. All things are Buddha things.
Then the lion lays down with the lamb. And there will be peace, instead of war. Instead of dropping atomic bombs, we will be releasing a flock of doves.
The remains of the Urakami Cathedral now stand stand in Nagasaki just beyond the concentric rings surrounding the hypocenter. Nagasaki’s government decided to rebuild the Urakami Cathedral in 1958, and this reconstruction is a functioning church open to visitors awaiting their voices to cry out not for nukes but for world peace.
I hope to hear yours join us too! Because neither Trump nor Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe are interested in a nuclear ban. Your’s is urgently needed before it’s too late.
In peace, Sydney Solis
