floating silently

boats on the blue-green waters

keep deep memories

Salty October, fish-scented air and the road curving along the bay around fishing boats signaled our arrival at tiny Tomonoura fishing village facing the Setouchi Seto Island Sea.

“The most beautiful scenery in the region east of Korea,” were the words of praise recorded in brush calligraphy by Lee Pang Eon, a member of a Korean mission that in 1711 stopped at the guest reception hall of Taichoro in Fukuzenji Temple where I found myself.

October silence —

a boat plowing a wake of white

crosses our view

I could stay here forever.
