Healthy Delight at Toufuryourisorano in Osaka for Traditional Japanese Food

Toufuryourisorano

Low chairs, tables and earthy wooden tables highlight the minimalistic elegance in Toufuryourisorano Japanese restaurant in Osaka.

The reason I started this blog about healthy traditional Japanese food (Washoku) is a lot because of Toufuryourisorano restaurant in Hommachi, Osaka, and within walking distance from my apartment in Shinmachi, Osaka.

I have been eating at different tofu restaurants around Japan and being amazed at how delicious, light and healthy the food is. After eating at Toufuryourisorano the night before with some neighbors who had recommended it, I remember waking up feeling so happy, fresh, healthy after such a wonderful dining experience.

From the moment my husband and I walked in to this minimalistic, Japanese urban styled restaurant with low lighting, low seats and earthy wooden tables, I knew we were in for a treat. Japanese aesthetics rule here. Even the English menu is on handmade paper and Japanese stab bound by hand. It’s moderately priced, and marks vegetarian items, as well as the Chef’s recommendations and a seasonal menu. The Japanese are big on eating seasonal, another wonderful mindful reason the food is so healthy.

The English menu lists plenty of vegetarian items. Many are vegan too, but ask about the soy sauce, as it may contain fish.

Japanese aesthetics and the joy of eating are more reasons traditional Japanese food is so amazing. Edamame, soybeans, are served in a little wooden box. The plates are handmade ceramics and each unique. Then there is the food!

Tofu cooked right at the table!

The handmade “Sorano Tofu” (900¥ for 2 people, 1,200¥ for 3-4 people)  is made fresh at the table with soy milk from top quality organic soy bans grown in Tokachi, Hokkaido. No artificial hardening chemicals are used, only pure, natural thickener. It melts in your mouth plain with wonderful fresh flavor. It’s nothing like the tofu you get in the United States. I

Tofu that is cooked with fresh, organic soy milk has a flavor on its own that is remarkable. No soy sauce needed, but you can always do so!

Vegetarians have a large selection to choose from on the menu: Deep fried wheat gluten (800¥ ) is superb, or the Rice with Tofu Skin in Thick Sauce (680¥). Tofu skin, yuba, is one of my favorite vegan discoveries, and theirs is prepared each morning.

Grilled Eggplant and Seasonal Vegetables in the Tofu Skin was another favorite, served with a plum and perilla sauce.

Deep fried Tofu with Miso, richly flavored Hatacho soybean paste, (580¥) is another soy dish that has a pleasing taste not found in the Western world. There are also many salads and plenty to eat for your meat-eating friends, like spicy Friend Chicken Wings in Sweet-Hot Sauce (680Y). Not so healthy or traditional Japanese, but hey, gotta keep the kids happy! And plenty of sake, wine, matcha drinks and more!
